The National School of Marine Science and Coastal Planning (ENSSMAL) is a training and research school in the field of oceanography, and coast management and planning.

The ENSSMAL is a young and lively institution combining the academic training and the scientific and technical training. It guarantee multidisciplinary courses at several levels including graduation (engineer) and post-graduation (Master and Doctoral degree).
The school staff, its training and research programs, its close connection to the national socio-economic sector, and its international cooperation and partners represent the fundament of the schools excellent performance and accomplishment. This assets provides the ENSSMAL an opening to the world, the high quality and excellence in its competencies fields.
The ENSSMAL established gals subscribes to a large perspective of marine science development and application in the Algerian context. Indeed, on both at a science based and a practical scale, the National Oceanography’s general objectives and based on:
- The high level training of senior executives and researchers for the marine resource management and the promotion of costal zones.
- The continuous training and the recovery for the benefit of using sectors.
- The contribution to the socio-economic development through generating marine scientific data, allowing an assessment and a suitable exploitation of marine resources, and efficient management of the coast.
- The contribution revitalization of the oceanographic research through reinforcing and consolidating the national, regional and international institutional cooperation.
- The promotion of the scientific research outcomes and the widespread of the technical and scientific knowledge.
The establishment of the ENSSMAL (Ex-ISMAL) by the executive decree N°08-221 of the 14th of July 2008 represent the materialization of a long process within the oceanographic research training in Algeria.
